Clear Eyed, Open Heart

Yoga in Purcellville VA

Yoga is Samadi

Power yoga is the experience of boundlessness.  People that practice yoga develop an awareness, and a circle of compassion that expands, outside our inner circles, growing wider and wider, to encompass all beings.  All we have to do in yoga is pay attention. By paying attention to the breath, transformation happens.

Letting life energy flow through us, coordinating the breath with a series of postures, one flowing into another.

As we flow into the fall season, in our practice  we create heat with the body, providing purifying sweat to cleanse the muscles, organs and mind, resulting in improved circulation, strength and a light body and mind… bliss.Yoga Bliss

A time for redirection of energy, activating the healing energy within the body/mind. Quietly turning inward, hearing the breath, noticing how engaging the bandhas keeps your mind present, and how this practice becomes a meditation as we build the heat, slowly breathing in and slowly breathing out. Lifting the energy upwards, breathing through the shorter, darker days, enjoying the warmth, the fire that peacefully burns inside of you. This slow, steady burn will guide you, both mind and body, keep you present, aware, open and quiet.  Beginning your day with a yoga practice that builds the heat, sheds the darkness, awakens the mind, body and spirit.

Mula Bandha

Is the root lock, the first of the three interior body “locks” used in asana and pranayama practice to control the flow of energy. Prevents the outward flow of energy to lock and interconnect inner systems. It increases flexibility and stimulates heat.  It is an objectless meditative state and inner supportive energy flows necessary to create synchrony with and enter into Samadhi. When mula bandha occurs there is less effort and more energy so it is not a contraction. It provides a pathway for spiritual reconnect.

Mula bandha consists of the contraction of the perineum (zone between the genitals and the anus) accompanied by a breath control technique.  It can take years of practice to cultivate and is essential for good concentration and more advanced yoga postures.  By bringing awareness to the core of the body, mula bandha helps prevent injury.  It guides you to move from your center, you will become lighter and flow more with your yoga practice.

Using the asana practice to go deeper inside the mind… entertaining the possibility… that is how we grow.

Moving from the outer to the more subtle, energetic,  inner, where the course of breath leads us to the energy (prana) awareness and then to communion with the implicate integrating intelligence at the source of this energy,

BLISS….

Namaste,

Carolyn

The Gratitude Project

The Gratitude Project 2012

Commit to yourself…

August 1 this year is going to be busy.  First, it’s a full moon on that night.  (As an aside, we’ll have two full moons in August, with the second one

on the 31st, which means we have 13 full moons this year).   Second, August 1 marks the halfway point for Summer.  We’re halfway through the Summer season in 2012 already!

Something I’ve been doing for years now that also starts on August 1 is called the Gratitude Project.   It was started by an on-line friend named Julie McCord.  The feeling was that we take all of the blessings that we have for granted.  Most of us would agree with that, but what do we do to change it?  The Gratitude Project is an attempt to make that change.  Between August 1 and the start of Fall, which is September 23, you have to think of one thing per day for which you are grateful.

Yoga 4 Life The Gratitude ProjectThe project entails you being mindful of whatever brings you Joy and you journal “the something” you are grateful for each day between those dates. No repeats – you can be grateful for your spouse/kids/job/friends, but the reason for the gratitude needs to be different for each entry. It can BIG or not, your journal/blog entry can be long or short. It can be on paper or in pixels and public or private.

Some days are easy, others are not.  Inevitably, there are days where everything’s going wrong and the last thing you’re considering is gratitude.  Those are the days when this project is most important.  You have to think, consider, really look at your life and find the positives that dwell within your life despite the crappy nature of a day.  It can be done.  Every year that I’ve done this project has seen some bitter and sad days, and yet there is always something for which I can be grateful and state it as such.

Commit to gratitude this year.  Commit to yourself.  Adopt the project and be grateful.  I think you’ll see just how much positive change it can affect for you.

 -Namaste

Patience in our Yoga Practice

Listen  ::  Feel  ::  Hear  ::  Speak  ::  Try  ::  Grow

There’s a line from an old song by the group Kansas (I’m dating myself here) which says:  “Treat yourself so gently though the task is often hard.”  I found myself saying that recently at the end of a yoga practice.   I was frustrated about a particular yoga pose and was about to become very self-critical.  I stopped myself before I started, because I realized that the criticism that I was about heap on myself was totally unjustified.  Even more importantly, as I later reflected, in yoga it’s really unjustified to criticize yourself at any time.  As tough as it is, even after a long and difficult practice, we need to practice treating ourselves gently.

What happened to me was kind of silly when I think about it.  We’d finished the regular yoga practice and a couple of us lingered to talk, as we often do.  I was tired but wanted to practice a yoga pose that I wasn’t comfortable trying at home by myself.  The pose is urdhva kukkutasana, which is not an easy pose at all.  The final pose has you in a crow pose posture, but your legs are folded into lotus position.  Every time I tried to lift my head off of the ground from tripod pose, my legs kept slipping off of my legs and I’d fall.  I got frustrated and that self-critical voice was about to rise.  Then I stopped and realized that I had already mastered so many other poses to get to this point that it was silly to be so upset.  Crow pose, tripod, tripod headstand, lotus tripod headstand, all of these intermediate steps I’ve accomplished.  Some day I will get that last piece of the puzzle, and then move on to the next challenge.  There was no need to be angry with myself.

Here’s the thing that I try to tell myself when I hit a frustrating time in my yoga practice; I’ve already accomplished the most important part.  I’m practicing yoga.  Each day practicing yoga  is a good day.  Even if my balance is off, my quads are screaming, my postures are messy, I’m doing better than I was before I started practicing yoga.  Every day that I practice, I’m better.  The next time you’re frustrated with a pose, try to treat yourself gently and recognize all of the progress that you’ve already made.  It’s pretty darned impressive what you’ve already done.  Keep practicing.

-Namaste

Patience

Downward Facing Dog Purcellville VAYoga is powerful.  It has the power to transform us and let us grow into who we are meant to be.   It can also be humbling and teaches patience, which of course also allows us to grow.  In our world however, where instant gratification is so often the goal, learning and practicing patience can be daunting.  I know that it is for me.  I want to be able to do a new yoga pose now, darn it!  Or at least I want to be able to do the pose after a little bit of work.  However, the truth is that it sometimes takes months or years of work and practice just to be able to move an extra inch or finally find a way to accomplish a particular pose  with just a slight adjustment.   Even if you do finally master a pose, it doesn’t mean that there won’t be setbacks.

A week ago I was practicing an Ashtanga sequence.  It wasn’t anything fancy but for some reason my body felt very strong that day.  Towards the end of class I tried two poses that have given me fits for ages.  One of them was head stand, and the other was wheel.  In head stand, I would wobble as I raised my feet to the sky and fall as a result.  Wheel was worse.  For some reason when I would try to rise up into wheel my left hand would always slip out from under me and I would come crashing down.  After awhile it got so bad that I didn’t even want to try the pose anymore.  For the last two months I’ve asked for assistance from instructors as I rose into the pose, and while I could do wheel this way it was a struggle every time.

On this day, I arose into head stand without any problems.  There were no wobbles at all; in fact I felt like I was floating on air.  As for wheel, the instructor was assisting someone else and I decided to try it alone.  I placed my hands in a different location, and shocked myself when I rose into wheel just as easily as taking a step.  I was so surprised that I lowered down and tried it again, and again it was perfect.  The next day it was the same, a perfect wheel pose.  I celebrated for days over these seeming conquests.

The following weekend, I was practicing in a flow class and again we were doing head stand and wheel.  As soon as I tried wheel, I once again had the same issues as before and came crashing down.  I tried again, changing my hand position, and while was able to do wheel it was much more of a struggle.  In head stand I also fell.  I tried again, with my teacher assisting, and again fell.  That was enough.

I felt so defeated!  What had gone wrong?  Why was I suddenly unable to do these poses that, just a week ago, had been so easy to do?

After class I talked with my teacher about what had happened in the head stand pose.  I set up in a different way on my mat so that I wasn’t interfering with someone else, and that might have contributed to the problems that I had.  Another possible cause was that my teacher had just made us do camel pose and the counter-pose had been very short.  She wondered if we needed to hold the counter-pose for longer.  However, one thing that she said made complete sense.  Sometimes poses just go away for awhile.  She told me that once in her practice there was a time when she simply couldn’t do crow pose for a number of months.  She had been fine doing it for some time, and then all of the sudden she couldn’t do crow at all for months.  Then, just as quickly, it came back.

Sometimes we go through phases when our bodies simply don’t want to do something that we’ve done many times before.  It doesn’t mean that we’ve lost a pose, just that we have to be patient and keep working until it comes back to us.  It is so very easy to get frustrated when we encounter these little speed bumps in our practice, or when we’re just so, very, close to achieving a pose.  The best advice is to be patient with yourself, keep working and practicing, and one day you’ll surprise yourself with all that you can do.

A Happy May Day to everyone today.

Namaste

John

Small Town, Big Heart

As I drove down Main Street in Purcellville yesterday I was sipping on my water, hydrating for my yoga class tonight.  I was noticing the charm of this small town with the warm happy people outside enjoying the beautiful weather. I was on my way to Yoga 4 Life for a Monday night yoga class taught by Lara.

I pulled my car around behind the house to the parking area and grabbed my favorite friend…my yoga mat and walked into the studio.  Candles were everywhere…it smelled of warmth, love, wood, earth and peace.  I changed into my yoga clothes in the bathroom and set up my mat.  I hadn’t taken a led class in a while and my personal- home practice had become a little boring.

Lara led us through an integration series, loosening up our bodies and awakening our senses. Then came the intention part (pick an intention for your practice)….for some reason I thought of inspiration.  I guess I wanted to find inspiration from my practice that night.   Inspiration came through at different moments in the class….it was just what I had asked for.

The class was a slow, mindful sequence of prana flow inspired yoga….it was great; she showed the class new ways to open up and prepare our body for peak asanas. (poses) The sequence allowed me to work my muscles, open up my tight areas, and connect my breath with movement.  After a healing and relaxing savasana (dead body pose) with a hint of lavender, she read an inspirational reading that matched my intention. A few tears fell from my eyes as I was making my way toward the front of my mat in a seated position to face her…I barely opened my eyes—just a squint to see her outline with all the candle light surrounding her….she is a gift- one I am so grateful for.  I just hope you get to experience this some time in this small town with a big heart.
